Is the Megaformer workout at Fit Buddha the same as Pilates?

While some have described the Megaformer™ workout as “Pilates on crack”, the Megaformer workout is NOT Pilates. While at first there may seem to be similarities, the workout method and results are very different. The Megaformer workout is a fusion of many of the core-focused fundamentals of traditional Pilates, blended with circuit training, strength training, and cardio, all performed on revolutionary, state-of-the-art equipment created by fitness guru Sebastien Lagree known as the Megaformer™. In Pilates, you typically take breaks between each set of exercises. The Lagree philosophy is that shorter transitions lead to faster burnout and muscle fatigue. Usually, in traditional Pilates classes, there isn't much of a sweat factor. There might be some sore muscles, although not a lot of sweat. Pilates and the Megaformer are both excellent forms of exercise. They are both safe and proven ways to improve your core strength, flexibility, balance, and muscle tone. That said, the Megaformer simply provides better results when it comes to fat loss, cardiovascular endurance, and strength. It is an unparalleled full-body workout that strengthens, tightens and tones the entire body quickly and safely, leaving the body lean, lithe and resistant to the stresses of everyday life. I'm ready to take my first Fit Buddha class. Should I start with a private lesson?

The answer to this question depends on your general fitness level. If you are new to working out or recovering from an injury, it is a good idea to book a private session, where you will get a personalized assessment before moving into a group class. Our Fit Buddha Intro Basic class is a great place to start for most people, as you will get a little more attention and explanation about the machine and our workout. If you have chronic pain, a severe medical condition, are pregnant or recovering from an injury, please be sure that your doctor has given you the go-ahead before undertaking any new physical activity. If you are concerned, just let us know and we will be happy to take care of you.

When should I arrive for my first class?

Please arrive at least 10 minutes prior to the scheduled start time for your orientation. The instructor will give you a run-down of the machine and answer any questions you might have. If you are a new client and do not arrive at least 5 minutes prior to the scheduled start time, we reserve the right to reschedule you for another time/date. This policy is to ensure your safety and enjoyment because we want you to be properly prepared with an overview of the Megaformer. It can also be very distracting for other clients when the teacher has to stop the class that has already started. This also applies to new guests who have done this method at another studio before. There is also a waiver you will need to fill out when you arrive.

Who can take classes at Fit Buddha?

Just about anyone. Classes are suited for people of all levels of fitness as you can push yourself as hard as you like. If you have any medical conditions, please make sure you have doctor approval first. If this is your first time taking a Lagree Method class, we suggest starting with the Intro package. To check availability for classes, log in to your account to access our live schedule.

How often should I practice on the Megaformer?

The workout is designed to work your body to muscle fatigue, at which point you will need to rest and recover. Depending on your own personal fitness level and the intensity of your workout, you will need more or less time to recover. We believe that 3-4 times a week (every other day) is ideal to allow your body proper recovery time; however, some clients love the workout so much that they come in 5 or more times a week! The key is to listen to your body and find a routine that works best for you.

How do I make the most out of my class?

One of the keys to an effective Fit Buddha – Megaformer class is transition time.  The less time we take transitioning from one exercise to the next, the more time you spend stimulating muscle fibers and keeping your heart rate up.  This translates to more calories burned and making your body into a calorie burning machine throughout the day.  Listen for your instructor’s cues and learn the crazy names of our exercises, this will make a big difference in utilizing your time in class effectively.

Can I workout on the Megaformer if I'm pregnant?

For clients who are pregnant and new to the workout, we do not advise starting our classes. However, clients who have been regularly attending classes may continue working out with us as long as you have received approval from your doctor. Please contact us if you have any questions.

Are there different level classes?

Our standard Megaformer classes are made for and welcome all fitness level types, however, we do offer introductory classes for a slower paced class and Megaformer or Megaformer Pro classes for a more intense experience.

How old do you have to be to take a Megaformer class?

14-years and under would have to take a private session first to be evaluated if the strength and the size of the person will fit the workout. If you’re under 18, we require a signature from a parent or guardian.

How do I schedule sessions?

Sign up is easy! Go to the “Log in/Sign up” button on the top right of our website, select your preferred studio and follow instructions for completing your profile. Selecting the correct studio when creating your profile is important. If you created your profile in the wrong location, just email us and we’ll get you assigned to the correct studio. You can sign up for one of our convenient autopay options, or purchase individual packages of classes. We have an easy-to-use and extremely secure software system to assist you in reserving sessions. If you forget your password or need more information, just send us an email. It is always best to reserve your sessions online to guarantee you have a machine available. However, please note that we welcome drop-ins and will release reserved spots if they open up to drop-in clients at the start of class time, so don’t be late!

Can my package be used at multiple Fit Buddha locations?

Yes! Your package can be divided up to be used in our 2 locations at no additional cost. If you plan to take classes from Fit Buddha studios in Santa Barbara or Ventura, you will need to have two separate accounts for both locations and we would split up the package. So please email us after you set up the accounts and let us know what package you have chosen. We can then split up the number of classes between the two studios. The booking process will be the same in either location. Enjoy!

What if I need to cancel my class?

No problem! We have an 8-hour cancellation policy.  That means you can cancel up to 8 hours before the class start time and the class will be credited back to your account for future use. Canceled classes cannot be switched within the 8-hour window, however, you may show up as a walk-in for another class that same day and if a spot is available, it’s yours! If you need to cancel a reservation, log into MindBody, go to My Info, click My Schedule and click Cancel next to the class time.  If you have trouble canceling or have any questions, email your local studio.

All sales are final. Classes are non-refundable, exchangeable or transferable.

What if my package expires before I've had a chance to use all of the sessions?

Packages are valid for one year and we hope you will be able to use them within that time frame. We also hope the expiration date encourages you to use the classes because of the amazing benefits of regular Fit Buddha attendance.  Please note that this does not apply to our monthly passes, where classes must be used within the month the package is activated. If classes are not used within the 30-day time period, you will lose the classes as the rates are much lower for those packages. No exceptions!

What happens if I miss a class?

Due to the limited number of spaces available in each session, Fit Buddha™ has two types of cancellation charges, Late Cancel and No Show. You must cancel your session with at least 8 hours notice to avoid a cancellation or no show penalty. A Late Cancel charge of $15 will occur if you cancel within 8 hours of class start time. A No Show charge of $25 will occur if you are signed up for a class and do not attend. Clients with packages and limited autopay contracts will lose that session from their package. Clients with unlimited packages will be charged!  This is strictly enforced as a reservation of a Megaformer takes a spot away from another client.

Will my spot be given away if I am late to class?

Yes. It is very important to arrive on time as a respect to other clients. Many times, clients will drop in to see if someone doesn’t show up, allowing them a space in the session. If you do not arrive on time, your space may be given to someone who is waiting upon designated class start time. Once the instructor is 2-3 minutes into the session, it is too disruptive to ask the drop-in client to get off the machine so the late client can get on. Please arrive at least 10 minutes before class. We realize life happens, but please do your best to plan for traffic, parking, etc. so you are not disappointed when you arrive late and someone else is in the spot you reserved. 5 minutes late is our cut off time and you will not be able to get your reserved spot anymore.

Can I wait list for a session that is full?

Absolutely, and we recommend doing this! Not only will you have better luck getting into a session, but it also helps us know where we need to add classes. Get on the list by clicking “Sign Up Now!” Then check for an email and text from Fit Buddha™ that tells you when you get in and you are automatically confirmed into the class – there is no need to reply. Waitlists close 12 hours before class start time, allowing you time to cancel your reservation without penalty if your plans have changed and you can no longer attend class. Remember, you are responsible for taking yourself off any waitlists or canceling any successful waitlist reservations if your plans have changed, or you will be subject to our cancellation policy. Within that 12 hour window, feel free to grab any opening without having to be on the waitlist.

TO CHECK YOUR WAITLIST STATUS, LOG INTO MINDBODY, GO TO MY INFO, CLICK MY SCHEDULE. IF YOU GOT INTO THE CLASS IT WILL SAY “WAITLIST UNCONFIRMED.” IF YOU DO NOT WANT THIS CLASS, BE SURE TO REMOVE YOURSELF. AS WE MIGHT NOT RECEIVE YOUR EMAIL IN AMPLE TIME TO DO IT FOR YOU.

Do you offer childcare?

Yes! Childcare is offered at select times at both studios. Please see classes with childcare option on the schedule for more details.

What should I bring (and not bring) to class?
  • Bring a hand towel as you will most likely sweat!
  • Bring a water bottle. Note: For safety reasons, no glass bottles, please.
  • Wear comfortable clothes you can easily move in, much like you would for a yoga class or the gym.
  • Jewelry is NOT a good idea as it tears up the machines and we do not want you to lose any precious items at our studio.
  • Non-slip tread socks are optional and are available for purchase at Fit Buddha. No shoes are needed for class.
  • No cell phones during class. Let yourself have 40-minutes that are all about you!
  • No strong perfumes as some students are allergic.
  • Your credit card is on file, so cash/credit/checks are not necessary unless you prefer not to make your payment online. Please understand that no classes can be confirmed if you're not prepaid.
Where do I park?

Ventura location: Free parking is available in the main lot on E Main St as well as E Santa Clara Street and N Oak St. There is also metered parking across from the studio on E. Main St, but please be sure to pay attention to street signs. The cost of metered parking is $0.50 per hour.

Santa Barbara location: Free parking is available in front of the studio, in the parking lot behind Casa Blanca Restaurant & Cantina on E. Guittierez St. There is also a parking lot across State Street on the corner, directly across from Casa Blanca, which is free for the first 75 minutes.
Can memberships, packages, or classes be transferred?

No memberships can be transferred and NO refunds will be issued for classes that are not used. We understand that life happens, but we can’t refund classes that were purchased and not used. In addition, FREE classes that were acquired through childcare or internships cannot be used by another client or friend.
